Chapter 9

Aurora Bright had a sunny disposition and was loved by all. One day, she found the necklace in the woods and knew it was for her, and she was for it. She put it on and wore it always. Soon after, she fell in love with the local blacksmith. Their love burned hot like the sun and his blacksmith fires.

“Look at Prudence’s soup shop. Isn’t it lovely?” Auntie Ida gushed. She was wearing her work jumpsuit from the day before, but she had applied Frances’s lipstick in a thick layer around her mouth. She had missed her lips entirely but had colored in her chin and cheeks, and it was hard to focus on anything else.

The coven were all dressed in their cloaks, which swept the floor when they walked. They looked down their noses at the diners, who were all paralyzed by the image of the imperious women who seemed to fill up the entire shop.

“I have our best table available for you,” I told them and showed them to a table by the back counter. “Today’s soups are tomato, creamy leek, Tuscan white bean, and Irish stew,” I told them.

“How nice for you,” Deliverance drawled.

“I want mutton,” Mercy said.

“I want a roast with carrots,” Charity said.

“I want chicken masala,” Hildegard said.

At least they hadn’t brought their familiars. That was a relief. Auntie Tilly rolled her eyes. “I’ll help cook,” she told me and dragged Auntie Ida in back with her.

“I don’t know why you keep this shop open,” Deliverance drawled. “It’s beneath you.”

“Beneath you,” Mercy said.

“Beneath you,” Patience echoed.

“Beneath you,” Charity repeated.

“Beneath you,” Hildegard sighed.

“Well…” I started, but they interrupted me to explain how Auntie Prudence had wasted her life and how I was doing everything wrong. The diatribe lasted a long time but stopped suddenly when the door opened, and Remington walked in.

Deliverance stood, her back ramrod straight, and her mouth dropped open when she saw him. Her eyes followed every move that Remington made. He waved at me, and I waved back, which made Deliverance step back in surprise. I motioned to Remington to sit at a center table, and a moment later, Deliverance and Charity walked up to him and introduced themselves.

They took their hoods off and adjusted their hair. I saw Patience bat her eyelashes from the other table. I recognized the reaction to Remington. It was pretty common. He was very impressive, especially the first time a person laid eyes on him. I thought about trying to save him from the coven, but I knew that he was “cooler than the other side of the pillow,” and he could take care of himself.

Besides, the door opened, again, and Vern’s friend Greg Ratcliffe walked in. “I’m so happy you came in for your creamy leek,” I told him and sat him at a table next to Remington.

“How’s Vern?” I asked after I served Greg.

“Much better. He’s going back to work tomorrow,” he said, but he was distracted by Remington. The entire coven had surrounded him, and Mercy was feeling his biceps.
